Howard Dean in Armenia

I’m told that Howard Dean is in town. The candidate for the 2004 U.S. Democratic Party presidential nomination is apparently here at the invitation of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation - Dashnaktsutyun (ARF-D). Intriguing. Will be interesting to hear what he gets up to and why he’s here. I’m told he’s already met the Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian.

UPDATE: Dean is definitely here as I’ve just seen him on the news on two TV stations. He obviously made the main story on the ARF-D affiliated Yerkir Media TV but his visit was relegated to the fourth story of the day on Armenia TV. Press conferences with Tigran Torosian and Arshak Sadoyan made the top two stories there. Still, interesting to learn more about his visit later.

In the meantime, ArmenPress have just posted a short news item on Dean’s meeting with the Armenian Foreign Minister. According to the item, Oskanian and Dean discussed the prospects for the political and economic development of the South Caucasus and Armenian-Turkish relations.

  2. Mr. Dean Goes to Yerevan

Melon celebrations, the seizure of orange items, merciful acceptance of converted vehicles–these are the kinds of stories I expect to hear out of Central Asia and the Caucasus. Hearing that Howard Dean is in Armenia is simply bizarre.
