Green Mama / Young Georgian Lolitaz, Stop Club, 1 September 2005

Ahead of tomorrow’s rock festival in Republic Square, I’ve just heard that two Georgian bands, Green Mama and the Young Georgian Lolitaz will be playing at the Stop Club in Yerevan tonight. Don’t know much about Green Mama but the Young Georgian Lolitaz are great and apparently have quite a following in Georgia. Incidently, the lead singer is half-Armenian and this is his first visit to Armenia.

Anyway, one interesting thing was said to me while talking to some more people about contemporary youth culture in Armenia. The idea was put forward that contemporary music in Armenia is at the same place now as it was in the West in the 1980’s while in Georgia it is in the 90’s. Interesting idea and something to ponder.

Update: Got to the Stop Club after Green Mama and the Young Georgian Lolitaz finished their sets, or rather I caught the last song from the latter — an incredible cover of The Beatles’ Tomorrow Never Knows. Instead, the two bands were jamming together and Narek, the young guitarist from Bambir (II) took to the stage with them as well. Good to see Armenian and Georgian rock musicians and fans come together like this.

Anyway, almost everyone said they liked Young Georgian Lolitaz in particular so I’m looking forward to seeing them perform in Republic Square tonight. They apparently do a wicked “indie” cover of Britney Spear’s Toxic.

  2. Regarding the rock festival in Yerevan, unfortunately MDP are no longer scheduled to perform. :-(

So, until they play in Yerevan at the end of September, only people in Germany will get a chance to see them live.
