Shahamir Shahamiriants, who had migrated there, was a revolutionary over 100 years ahead of his time who came up with a detailed program envisioning a free, independent Armenia. The head of the nation was to be the Catholicos of All Armenians. Madras was home to a thriving Armenian community. From what I understand at least one of the Armenian churches built there remain today.
