It reduced the bounciness of the ball. I don't think cricket is a boring game. I think it's an excuse for the families to picnick and enjoy a day out. Pretty much like most of the sporting events: baseball is a family fun just like football games or racing. Plus, in Europe and the US, these events are an excuse to drink a lot of beer.
