Armenian Cinematographers Concerned over Manifestations of Xenophobia in Russia

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ Nationalist actions against foreigners in Russia are aimed against the unity of Russia itself, stated Armenian film director, Secretary of the Union of Cinematographers of Armenia Mikayel Dovlatyan. In his words, civil wars begin exactly with actions like these. We remind that a group of unknown persons attacks Dovlatyan in Moscow underground passage on April 23. He was hit with a bottle on his head, after which those attacking dispersed. Dovlatyan was in Moscow to take part in the Forum of National Cinematographies.

The film director also reported that the Confederation of the Union of Cinematographers of Armenia has sent a letter to the Governments of Russia and Moscow, expressing its attitude on the vent. Specifically, the letter expressed concern that xenophobia manifestations threaten humanitarian cooperation between the countries.

Racially and ethnically motivated violence seems to be on the rise in Russia. Some of the most publicized cases that took place in April alone include an attack on a TV journalist of Azeri origin on a subway train in the center of Moscow; an attack on the culture minister of Kabardino-Balkaria that occurred as he was picking up his daughter from a dance class, also in Moscow; the St. Petersburg murder of Lamzar Samba, 28, a communications student from Senegal. Finally, around 6 PM yesterday, a 17-year-old Armenian was stabbed to death at Pushkinskaya subway station in the center of Moscow, by a young man who appeared to be a skinhead.

Racist assaults have become common in Russia, where young men are increasingly prone to neo fascist beliefs despite the country being proud of its role defeating Nazi Germany.

“Many Russians feel humiliated that the nation’s authority and economic power plunged as a result of these faulty reforms in the recent past,” said retired physicist Yevgeny Petrov after laying flowers at the spot where Abramyants was killed. “But it’s the most dastardly thing — to give vent to your humiliation and attack innocent people who look non-Slavic.”

African and Asian students are frequently targeted, along with darker-skinned immigrants from Russia’s former colonies in the South Caucasus and Central Asia.
