Habitat for Humanity Armenia — Aghavnadzor

My second visit out to a site with Habitat for Humanity in Armenia took me to Aghavnadzor in the Vayots Dzor region of the country. A group of Diasporan Armenians mainly from Detroit in the United States had arrived in the village to volunteer in the construction of a house for a local family.

To date, numerous Armenian Church teams from the U.S. have traveled to Armenia, volunteering to build homes alongside families in need, and Habitat for Humanity affiliates in the U.S. have designated tithes to help combat poverty housing in Armenia. In 2005, the Catholicos participated in the annual Jimmy Carter Work Project in Michigan.

Anyway, with the third Armenia-Diaspora Conference scheduled for September focusing on regional development in the Republic, this project illustrates how locals andDiasporans can work together in regions and villages seldom visited by tourists and other foreign visitors. Actually, the day was quite encouraging and refreshing.

For more information on the Catholicos Karekin II Work Project check out the Habitat for Humanity Armenia web site here.
