Best Rock Band in Armenia?

Joshua Kucera posts an entry about the different types of music he’s experiencing in Armenia. In particular, he writes briefly about Gyumri rockers Bambir, posts a video taken last night and links to an article I wrote about the band for Hetq Online way back when.

Last night I went to see what is apparently the best indie band in Armenia, Bambir, and I can see why people say that. The show was terrific, they rock the flute like no one since Jethro Tull (and in this interview, they all talk about how much they loved Jethro Tull as kids).

Incidentally, after flicking through my book on poverty in Armenia, Bambir used over a hundred of my photos as the backdrop for their most recent music video for a song from their still unreleased second album although I’ve yet to see it. When I do I’ll upload it to YouTube and post a link.

  2. Anush, one day I hope to see it!

Anyway, while you’re there, I might as well post links to some of the entries you’ve made on the band over at The Armenian Patchwork for readers.

    Sksela… and Rock in Yerevan

There’s also plenty of posts about them under the Rock category on this blog too.

  3. BTW: Talking of music, Aramazd post photos of Sunday’s reunion of Gor Mkhitarian and Mher Manoukian from Vanadzor rock band Lav Eli. Mher is Aramazd’s brother, btw, and also seemingly a key figure in the radical opposition Impeachment bloc.

He was also one of those beaten in the recent skirmish outside the NSS (former KGB building) in Yerevan. According to Aramazd, Gor and Mher had already staged a gig in support of Impeachment on 5 May. Anyway, Aramazd posts some photos from the latest show here.

  4. Tull was steeped in the folk genre of the British isles. This is what made Ian Anderson so successful in bridging the traditioaal and rock idioms. Can the same be said of Bambir????
